IF IT HAD NOT BEEN THE LORD! If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul PSALM 1242-4, KJV. Another version puts it thus “ Let all Israel repeat What if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us? They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger. The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. The scripture reflects the idea of Gods protection and deliverance in the face of adversity. It also echoes the goodness of the Lord in protecting and delivering His people. At the time of writing the psalm, angry pagan nations were ready to swallow up Israel and destroy her, but the Lord intervened. We who believe in Jesus Christ can say the same even in our country. Many threatening situations abound today. Crippling inflation, unemployment, insecurity and poverty. Beloved, God gives enough grace for whatever we face. Though troubles assail and dangers affright, though friends should all fail and become few or unite against us, yet one thing I know secures us whatever betide, the Lord will care for you today and for ever in the mighty name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ AMEN.
